A cherished holiday tradition since 2009, Lessons and Carols is the Alden Street Foundation’s annual gift to members of the former St. Andrew the Apostle parish—and to the wider community. Originally created as a way to help keep parishioners connected after the parish closed, this joyful celebration of the season has grown into a beloved gathering that welcomes all.
Inspired by the world-famous service of Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge, the program weaves together scripture, music, and fellowship. The event features choral performances, a small instrumental ensemble, congregational singing of familiar carols, and a children’s Christmas pageant that beautifully retells the story of Jesus’ birth. The magnificent organ at the church provides accompaniment throughout, and lends a majestic background to the service.
Following the celebration in the church sanctuary, everyone is invited downstairs for refreshments, conversation, and the warmth of community—renewing old friendships and making new ones.
Lessons and Carols 2025 will be celebrated this year on Sunday 12/14/25 at 2:00pm at the Erwin First United Methodist Church 920 Euclid Avenue, Syracuse, NY. Admission is free, and all are welcome. All young children who attend are invited to participate in the pageant (no rehearsal needed).
